The pier of V. Fulidhoo has been separated from the island since January and MTCC has been entrusted with the task of repairing it.
The pier in Fulidhoo, an island famous for local tourism, has been damaged since January and some newspapers reported the great difficulties faced in getting on and off the island, citing the island council.
MTCC has taken over the repair of the pier in Fulidhoo, Construction Minister Dr Abdullah Muthalib said in a Facebook post on Wednesday evening.
"The MTCC team will go to Fulidhoo this Saturday to carry out the practical work of repairing the pier until the port of V. Fulidhoo is built," he said.
The media had quoted the Fulidhoo council as saying:
-
When the Fulidhoo pier was completed in 2019, the pillars of the pier were not properly laid; the pier was completely destroyed by the moving sands surrounding the island and erosion
-
The detached pier has brought local businesses to a halt
Since no port or harbour has been constructed in Fulidhoo, the pier was the only way to get on land, until it too broke off. Former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih had announced a plan to build a port in Fulidhoo so that the damage to the island’s nature would be minimalised, but the work has not yet begun.
