The water company, Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced that it will give discounts to those who did not get discounts on their water bills during the month of Ramadan. Discounts were given for bills issued from March 11 to April 11.

Some people have complained about the high utility bills charged and sent during the Ramadan period. Although the bill sent to customers during Ramadan included discounts, people started complaining that their electricity and water bills were too high in comparison.

Following the complaints, it was decided on Thursday to offer discounts on electricity and water used during the fasting period.

The MWSC said in a statement on Sunday that if the April bill is higher than the March bill, the increase will be deducted from the April bill.

Accordingly:

  • Even if the deductible amount is less than 10% of the April bill, a 10% discount will be given

  • Even if the April bill is lower than the March bill, a 10% discount will be given

  • Even if the first bill sent to new water and electricity customers is the April bill, they will also get a 10% discount on the April bill

MWSC will be notifying customers of the discount amount on their April water bills and the amount to be paid via SMS from Sunday onwards.

MWSC urges customers to pay their bills without delay.

MWSC said it gave a total discount of MVR 14.13 million on water bills on March-April bills. That was 24.5% of the amount billed for domestic categories.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on March 4 during his campaign for the last parliamentary elections that the government would give a discount to keep electricity and water bills constant during Ramadan.
