
Reconstruction of China-funded Male, Villimale roads begin
The initiative is part of an agreement signed during the President Mohamed Muizzu's state visit to China in January.
The government has begun work on reconstructing roads in Male and Villimale under a project supported by the Chinese government.
The construction ministry announced that the roadwork officially started on Friday. The initiative is part of a grant agreement signed during the President Mohamed Muizzu's state visit to China in January.
According to the construction ministry, a technical team appointed by the Chinese government conducted a feasibility study of the roads from the 5th to the 21st of this month. During this period, the team assessed the condition of the roads and held meetings with key stakeholders of the project.
The ministry stated that the project aims to upgrade the existing roads and includes a design phase to ensure sustainable improvements.
Under the project, the roads in Male and Villimale will be paved and developed with upgrades to water, sewerage, and electricity infrastructure. Additionally, fire hydrants and stormwater systems will be installed as part of the work.
