Baa Atoll Hospital on Friday launched eye care services at the hospital with the help of a tourist who had consulted there.

The British tourist, who vacationed at Soneva Fushi resort in Baa atoll, went to the atoll's hospital a year ago after taking ill. The man was admitted to the hospital for two days. He left the island bolstered with the kindness that the nurses had shown for him, promising to provide the hospital with the help it needed.

Speaking to Atoll Times, Baa Atoll Hospital Manager Mohamed Rasheed said that at that time, the atoll needed eye care facilities. Therefore, with the help given by the middle-aged tourist, eye care has been introduced in the hospital, he said.

"We got $10,000 worth of equipment. It was a much-needed help," Rasheed said.

"Now, the hospital can provide all services except eye surgery."

According to the manager, the tourist wanted to help the hospital as a reward for the kindness shown to him by the nurses there.

"He told me he was very comfortable here. And his aid was a gift given in return for that," Rasheed said.

The tourist, who usually comes on vacation to Baa atoll, is currently in the United Kingdom. He still checks on what the hospital further needs, over the phone, the manager said.

Data from Baa atoll also show that:

  • Most people in the atoll are seeking treatment for eye ailments

  • The atoll people have to go to Male or Raa Ungoofaaru for treatment for the smallest of ailments
